Real Madrid cruised up to third in La Liga on Sunday with a 4-1 slaughtering of Getafe, despite record signing Gareth Bale getting injured before the game had begun.
Angel Lafita had given Getafe a shock early lead with a shot which took a wicked deflection off Real defender Pepe.
But Pepe made amends by quickly equalising; turning in the rebound after an effort from Cristiano Ronaldo had been blocked.
Ronaldo made it 2-1 with a fierce low drive, and then cleverly set up Isco for the third goal.
In stoppage time, Ronaldo made it 4-1 with an impudent back heel. The whites are two points behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who have both won their first five matches.
Real are two points above fourth-placed Villarreal, who were held 0-0 at Celta Vigo earlier on Sunday. Villarreal dominated possession but lacked the craft and speed to break down the Celta defence.
Earlier in the day, Betis were held 0-0 by Granada, a result which left the Seville side 11th and Granada 12th.
Sunday’s late game saw Valencia beat bottom team Sevilla 3-1, in a clash between two sides that have made a poor start. Brazilian striker Jonas scored twice for Valencia, defender Victor Ruiz sealed the win by making it 3-1. Kevin Gameiro scored for Sevilla.DPA
