James Bond

What connects cool gadgets, fast paced action, and spies? James Bond of course! It is said that half the world’s population has seen at least one James Bond movie. The British secret agent, with the code name 007, was created by author Ian Fleming in 1953, and he was featured in a number of novels and short stories.  The first Bond film Dr No was made in 1963 and has been the longest continually running series till date, featuring in 25 films. A series of actors including Sean Connery, David Niven, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig have played Bond, bringing him to life on the big screen.

Roger Moore

The English actor is best known for playing James Bond in seven movies between 1973 and 1985 and is the longest serving Bond actor. He played Bond in movies like The Spy who loved me, Moonraker and Live and Let die.  His other memorable roles include Simon Templar in the television series The Saint, which made him famous worldwide. After seeing his friend Audrey Hepburn’s humanitarian work, he too became involved with UNICEF and was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador in 1991. He received the Dag Hammarskjöld Award from the UN in 2008 for his charity work.

Dag Hammarskjöld

Dag Hammarskjöld in 1953 held the post Ban ki-moon holds today. The Swedish diplomat and economist was the Secretary-General of the United Nations between 1953 and 1961, when he was killed in a plane crash. During his tenure, he tried to improve relations between Israel and the Arab states. He was on his way to negotiate a cease-fire in Zambia when his plane crashed. There were several enquiries conducted and theories that the crash was not an accident still continue to exist, although this was never proved. The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to him posthumously in 1961. Other winners of the Peace Prize include Barack Obama, Mother Teresa and Carl von Ossietzky.

Carl von Ossietzky

Carl von Ossietzky was a German pacifist who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935. He published details that allegedly showed that Germany had violated the Treaty of Versailles by rebuilding an air force and training pilots.  For this, he was convicted of treason and espionage. He was a journalist and an editor of the periodical Die Weltbühne, in which the exposes were carried. He continued to publish articles against Nazism and was taken to a concentration camp. In 1935 he was awarded the Nobel Prize.
