What is Qwikipedia?

Ever been on Wikipedia to look up an article? More often than not, we start with one topic, click a few links and within no time are reading about something else.

Qwikipedia is a game that tries to quench this curiosity in us. The objective is to get to a particular wiki page, starting from a specific article, using minimal clicks. There is no single correct answer, so we might surprise ourselves by finding new routes each time!

Roadkill —> George Bernard Shaw

Roadkill

You may have read on yesterday’s Signpost page about Arthur Boyt’s favourite cuisine – roadkill! Roadkill refers to animals that have been struck and killed by motor vehicles. This phenomenon has resulted in the decline of several species like the moose, koala bear and the grey wolf. Eating roadkill is legal provided the animal is already dead and was killed accidentally, not deliberately. As bizarre as it sounds, eating roadkill isn’t completely out-of-the-box; there are several recipe books dedicated to this cuisine.

Grey wolf

This species of wolf is native to North America, Eurasia and North Africa. The grey wolf resembles a German Shepherd in looks and size, but has a larger head, narrower chest, longer legs and tail, and bigger paws. They are one of the world’s best researched animals with several books written about them. Because they are considered a threat to livestock they are often hunted, so much that they were driven to extinction in some countries, like Ireland.

Ireland

This island off the north-west of continental Europe is the third-largest in Europe. Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland (five-sixths of the island) and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, which includes the rest. Ireland has made vast contributions to arts and literature. Several literature Nobel Prize laureates came from here: WB Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, and more recently, Seamus Heaney.

George Bernard Shaw

This Irish playwright is the only person to have won a Nobel ‘Prize and an Oscar. He won the Oscar for the work on the film adaptation of his play  Pygmalion . However, having no desire for public honours, George Bernard Shaw was about to refuse his Nobel Prize and would have done so if not for his wife who wished he would accept it as a tribute to Ireland. He did refuse the monetary award.

So the path that we have traversed today is:

Roadkill —> Grey wolf —> Ireland —> George Bernard Shaw

Three clicks! Hop over. It’s time for the next question:
