What is Qwikipedia?

Ever been on Wikipedia to look up an article? More often than not, we start with one topic, click a few links and within no time are reading about something else.

Qwikipedia is a game that tries to quench this curiosity in us. The objective is to get to a particular wiki page, starting from a specific article, using minimal clicks. There is no single correct answer, so we might surprise ourselves by finding new routes each time!

Howrah Bridge —> Honey Bee

Howrah Bridge

If you’d picked up our edition yesterday, you surely wouldn’t have missed the image showing the Howrah Bridge wearing a deserted look. The scene captured emphasises the two-day nationwide strike called by Central trade unions on Wednesday and Thursday. It’s not often that you get to see it that way, for it generally bears a daily traffic of over 1,00,000 vehicles and even more pedestrians.

A suspension type balanced cantilever bridge that spans the Hooghly River, it was commissioned in 1943 as the New Howrah Bridge linking the cities of Howrah and Kolkata. Though it was renamed in 1965 as Rabindra Setu, after Rabindranath Tagore, it is still popularly known as the Howrah Bridge.

Nivedita Setu

There are four bridges that ply over the Hooghly River including the Howrah Bridge. The three others are Vidyasagar Setu, Vivekananda Setu and Nivedita Setu, which is the newest.

Named after Sister Nivedita, a disciple of Swami Vivekananda, Nivedita Seti is a cable-stayed bridge built at an estimated cost of Rs. 6,500 million. Built by Larsen and Toubro in a record time, the Nivedita Setu has won an Award of Excellence from the American Segmental Bridge Institute USA.

There are many different counting systems. The ones which we use goes on like ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, lakh, ten lakh, crore and so on. If you instead move from ten thousands to hundred thousands and then on to the next, that would be a million!

A word derived from the Italian milione, 1 million is the natural number after 999,999 and before 1,000,001. Metaphorically, the word million is used in many places in the English language; “you are one in a million”, “that is a million dollar question”, to name a few.

How could we possibly visualise a million? Well, if we take a computer screen with a display resolution of 1280 by 800, then it contains over a million pixels – 1,024,000 to be precise! Or if you consider weight, 80 million honey bees would weigh the same as a 80 kg person!

Honey bee

Honey bees are a subset of bees that are different in that they produce and store honey and construct colonial nests of wax. They represent a small fraction among more than 20,000 known species of bees.

A recent British study has claimed that venom shots obtained from bees could help us fight headaches. In ancient tradition, bee stings were used to tackle various ailments. This proposed therapy is, therefore, rooted to the past in a way.

So the path that we have traversed today is:

Howrah Bridge —> Nivedita Setu —> Million —> Honey bee

Three clicks! Hop over. Its time for the next question:
