The engineer who operated the New York commuter train that derailed over the weekend, killing four people, has told investigators he had nodded off just seconds before the over-speeding train veered off the tracks, as he expressed remorse over the tragedy.

The engineer, William Rockefeller, met with investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board, Metropolitan Transportation Authority and New York City police for more than three hours on Tuesday and was emotional and “extremely remorseful,” his lawyer Jeffrey Chartier said in a New York Times report.

The Grand Central bound Metro North train was travelling at a speed of 82 miles per hour as it veered off the tracks along a curve, nearly three times faster than the 30 miles per hour speed limit near the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx, authorities said.PTI
