Sangeeta Nighantu, a dictionary on the art form, will be released today
Music lovers could, from November 15, turn to a dictionary that will help them understand the beautiful blend of silence and sound that the art form is.
The dictionary, ‘Sangeeta Nighantu’, has been put together by V.T. Sunil, an assistant professor at the Sree Swathi Thirunal Government College of Music. It took Mr. Sunil’s 15 long years to create the encyclopaedic text, detailing the various dimensions of music, from instruments and composers to ragas, the usages of certain ‘taala’ or rhythms and other little nuances that constructs the musical scene in the country.
The volume, consisting of 827 pages, has been arranged as per alphabetical order.
“Taking into account that there has been no such text formerly published, I hope that it will be of interest for everyone remotely interested in music,” said Mr. Sunil. The author has also included snippets of western music literature as well.
