The ‘golden jubilee Independence memorial,’ an abstract work of art set up in front of the Secretariat to mark the 50{+t}{+h}anniversary of Indian Independence, is being demolished. An expert committee set up by the government to decipher the art that had gone into the memorial had reported that there was no art involved in the structure, which was inaugurated on March 21, 2001 by the then Chief Minister E.K. Nayanar. Minister for Information and Public Relations K.C. Joseph on Wednesday said the committee had observed that the memorial, constructed at a cost of Rs.23,71,825, was ‘repulsive’ and ‘shameful’ considering the fact that it was meant to serve as a golden jubilee monument for Indian Independence. The place where the monument stood would be beautified by proper landscaping.
