Regional winners will compete in the finals in Chennai on December 7

Students of Loyola School here once again proved that they are unbeatable when it came to quizzing. The school, which produced last year’s national winners, took home this year’s The Hindu Young World Quiz regional winner’s trophy, beating 301 teams at the competition held at the Pattom Thanu Pillai Memorial Priyadarshini Hall here on Thursday.

D. Ganesh and Aditchandra, ninth standard students of Loyola School, were the clear winners as the team scored a whopping 176 points as against the first runners-up, H. Shankar and Sidharth Uday of Bhavan’s Vivekananda Vidya Mandir, Manvila, who could score only 82 points.

Tony P. James and A. Prajith from MGM R.P. School, Kottarakara, with 59 points bagged the third place in the final round of the 13th edition of the quiz, which saw six teams compete for the coveted prize.

District Collector K.N. Satheesh presented the regional winner’s trophies and certificates from The Hindu , a cash prize of Rs.12,000 and gifts from various sponsors. The first runner-up received a cash prize of Rs.8,000 and the second runner-up, Rs.6,000 as well as trophies and certificates.

The Hindu Young World quiz, an integral part of the Newspaper in Education initiative of The Hindu saw students from more than 80 schools in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Kanyakumari districts vying with each other for the top honours. They had to undergo a written preliminary test, following which six teams with the top scores were qualified for the final round and a head-on fight for the coveted prize with quiz master V.V. Ramanan leading the battle.

The regional winners of the 16 centres in the country will compete in the finals to be held at Chennai on December 7. The Hindu will bear their travel and accommodation expenses, including that of one parent or guardian per team. The winners of the finals will receive Rs.50,000, while the runner-up will get Rs.40,000. The team which comes third will get Rs.30,000.

There will be an online quiz presented by Britannia Milk Bikis Future Minds for students from Classes IV to IX. The prizes for the online quiz will be Apple iPads and HCL tablet. Log on to www.thehindu. com/ywq to participate.
