Alex, 3, a Labrador from the police dog squad, won the gold medal for the ‘best tracker’ at the State Police Duty Meet held recently in Thiruvananthapuram.

The meet showcased the prowess of the canine squad in detecting drugs, and explosives, and tracking offenders, said Lohithakshan, the officer in charge of Alex.

Alex was posted here in 2010 after getting trained at the Police Academy, Thrissur.

The dog proved his proficiency in a case where gold and cash worth Rs.25,000 were stolen from the house of Venugopal, a school teacher. The case was registered at the Chandera police station and Alex successfully tracked the spot where the gold was hidden,” Mr. Lohithakshan said. “We also have Whiskey, 11, a sniffer dog which won the gold medal in the 2004 meet. Jacky, 13, another member of the squad, is adept at tracing hidden explosives,” he said.

The inadequate fencing around the Armed Rifles Camp had been affecting their training as cattle and stray dogs entered the premises, sources said.
