Delays draw flak

Long delays in starting contests and the long distance between the venue at Bishop Moore College and other venues took the sheen out of the Kerala University Youth Festival, leaving participants running around to reach their venues.

The trouble began from Day 1 on Wednesday, when Mohiniyattom contest scheduled for 7 p.m. began by 9.30 p.m. The entire contest concluded by 3.10 a.m. on Thursday morning. The contests on Thursday were scheduled at 9 a.m., but it was delayed by at least two hours in most of the venues.

The haphazard manner in which the youth festival is being conducted has drawn flak from all quarters. The contestants of Kathakali protested against performing using recorded music captured on CDs. They protested on the stage with make-up on their faces. The kathakali contests for both male and female categories were later cancelled. Only three contestants were getting ready to participate in the Ottan thullal contest when reports last came in. The delay in starting the first item led to a series of delays resulting in possibility of most of the contests not getting over even after midnight. The fancy dress was disappointing as the judges did not even hide their disappointment over the performance of participants. The first prize went to the performance that was based on shortage of water.
