FIH introduces new rules in field hockey

Field hockey is changing the game from 70 minutes and two halves to 60 minutes and four quarters to make it more fan friendly, the International Hockey Federation announced on Thursday.

To ensure the 60 minutes of playing time is maximised, there will be 40-second timeouts after penalty corners have been awarded and goals scored, to give teams time to reset. The rule changes will apply from Sept.1. FIH president Leandro Negre says in a statement, “The decision demonstrates our commitment to fan engagement…In addition, coaches and players will see improvement in their performance with the additional opportunities to rehydrate and re-strategize.”AP
