With the objective of helping students cope with stress, the Coimbatore Chapter of Indian Academy of Paediatrics has been addressing students in the past few days. According to Meenakumari Mohan, Treasurer of the Chapter, the objective is to help children swim confidently through difficult times.
With the help of the Chapter members, she says paediatricians have addressed students of Mani Higher Secondary School, PSGR Krishnammal Higher Secondary School, National Model Higher Secondary School, Ideal Mount Litera Zee Matriculation School and SBOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School in the last couple of days. They will also talk to students of PSG Sarvajana Higher Secondary School, Sri Ramakrishna Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Elgi Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Sree Narayana Mission Matriculation School in the next couple of days.
Dr. Meenakumari says that the paediatricians are talking to students about decision making, creative thinking, critical thinking, problem solving, and negotiation skill among others.
Paediatrician Angeline Prema, who addressed the SBOA students, says that as the first stop of parents for children’s health needs, paediatricians are to an extent capable of addressing them. Only for problems that required clinical interventions, the parents ought to tap on the doors of psychologists. In her presentation, she spoke about how students could cope with stress and manage emotions, take rational decisions, communicate effectively, the steps involved in decision making, etc.
