It was the ‘Pi Approximation Day’ at the Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan here on Sunday.

With 2012 marked as the National Year of Mathematics, the ‘Pi’, circumference of a circle has a day for itself.

Interestingly, the ‘Approximate Pi Day’ coincides with the 125{+t}{+h}birth anniversary of the great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

Students of classes VIII, IX and X made a presentation on the ‘Pi’ and its influence on physics and mathematics. There was a display that included Aryabhata’s life history and also that of Willian Jones, the Welsh mathematician who discovered ‘Pi’ value and Yasumasa Kanada, the Japanese scientist.

Around 125 students gave expression to what they knew about it, by displaying on charts, several applications, its origin and methods to find out the approximate value of the ‘Pi’ using a circle, cone and other surface areas.

Founder and Vice-Chancellor of the Dravidian University, Kuppam, P.V. Arunachalam, mathematician S. Chandrasekhar Sastry, Director, Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan Ch. Vasu Prakash and others were present on the occasion.

Kiran school students celebrate

The ‘Pi Approximation Day’ was celebrated in a grand manner at Kiran English Medium High School, Tirupati this weekend. The mathematical symbol ‘Pi’ represents the mathematical equivalent 22/7, which is similar to the date 22nd July. It is hence a practice to observe the day on 22nd July every year. The event assumes greater importance as the year is also celebrated as the ‘Year of the Mathematics’. K. Kannan, Dean of Humanities and Sciences at SASTRA University, Tanjavur, was the chief guest. He explained the importance of mathematical constant i.e., the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Correspondent G. Jayarami Reddy explained the history, evolution of ‘Pi’ . The students formed a circle around a giant-sized ‘Pi’ on the floor and among those who took part enthusiastically were personality trainer ‘Maharshi’ Sagar and parents.
