Man tries to attack Iranian President with a shoe in Cairo

Egyptian police held a man for attempting to hit Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with a shoe in a Cairo mosque, reported the local media on Wednesday.

The man, believed to be a Syrian, chanted slogans against Iran’s backing for Damascus, as he tried Tuesday night to thread his way through a crowd towards Ahmadinejad in al-Hussein Mosque in Cairo, said the independent Egyptian newspaper al-Shorouk.

A video footage released by the Turkish Anadolu News Agency showed the man striking out with the shoe several times in the direction of Ahmadinejad.

The man was restrained by security personnel in plain clothes, as the Iranian leader was waving with a hand to a welcoming crowd. Hitting a person with a shoe is considered a grave affront in the Arab world.DPA
