For the last six years, S.S. Shinu has been running across the length of the State to help poor patients find money for their treatment.
This year, the 27-year-old started his marathon run from Pazhaya Uchchakada in Thiruvananthapuram district on September 13. Shinu reached Haripad in Alappuzha district on Wednesday. He will run up to Kasaragod covering all 14 districts.
Shinu has so far collected Rs.12 lakh for the treatment of patients suffering from cancer and other diseases. It all began when he lost his aunt, whose demise was followed by the death of his sister and uncle. The successive tragedies prompted him to do something to help treat poor patients.
Shinu, the second child of Srinivasan of Roadarikathu House in Vishnupuram in Neyyattinkara, has studied up to Class X. He ekes out a living by working in a vegetable shop in Thiruvananthapuram. “I have not been able to contribute a single paisa to my family because I have been concentrating on my marathon run to help poor patients. But my family understands this and does not complain,” he says.
This year, he is running to fund the surgery of two children, Shivani of Kattakada in Thiruvananthapuram district and Akshay of Ernakulam district. He had helped collect Rs.1.4 lakh for the treatment of Akshay earlier.
Akshay is now in need of another surgery. All except one patient that he helped has survived.
