An art critique described his paintings as “Poems in Pigment”. But, there is another side to Padma Sri Award winner and abstract painter of international repute, S.V. Rama Rao’s life, which is not known to many.

Renowned painter Rao was the only artist from India to be invited by the International Alphabet of Modern Art, New Vision Central Gallery, London, to participate in an exhibition to showcase his work alongside other modern art legends such as Picasso, Miro, Dali, Brasque and Pollock.

His paintings hang in the prestigious Museum of Modern Art, New York, (MoMa). Mr. Rao is as passionate about writing poetry as he is about painting.

His poetry:

“From the crying eyes of the sky,

ever gushing extra-terrestrial cold winds

down pouring freezing rains solidified,

as Himalayan ranges, mighty Alps

and rows and rows of Andy mountains,

squatting flat on earth

with their wide, bodies.

These glassy white mammoth beehives are not mere,

featherweight giants, But miles-high boulders of solid ice

unbreakable even with a Thunderbolt of God Indra,”

reads a stanza from his poem “Consoling Friend”. Several poems written by him have been printed in America Bharati, a literary magazine published by the American Telugu Association.

The painter is also a member of the Illinois Poetry Society which publishes poems written by members on its website and has regular discussion sessions.

Writing is not new to Mr. Rao. He used to contribute articles and letters to various publications right from his college days in Gudiwada.

He fondly remembers his English teacher and vice-principal of ANR College, Yedavalli Sanyasi Rao. But, he began writing a lot of poetry after he settled down in Chicago.

Resides in Chicago

He lives in Chicago with anaesthesiologist wife Suguna. After living abroad for several years, painting and teaching fine art, Mr. Rao returned to New Delhi to work for a ‘one-man show’. He was in Vijayawada to visit his sister who lives here.
