With sizzling days ahead of us, lorry loads of watermelons have arrived here from neighbouring districts and from places in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. "Going by the early indications for the demand of the fruit, we are expecting a good sale this season,'' said a local vendor. The prices have shot up this season as compared to last year. The price ranges from Rs.25 to Rs.100. The ones from Tamil Nadu and Kerala range from Rs.60 to Rs.100, depending on the size. The watermelon sellers have attached a juice unit too. Slices of the fruit cost for Rs.2.The fruit is rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that gives its luscious colour. Lycopene prevents heart disease and cancer by mopping up free radicals. The juicy flesh is also rich in Vitamin A and contains some Vitamin C. Vitamin A is essential for vision, reproduction, growth and for maintaining a healthy skin.
