With books what more can you ask for?

Summer needn't always be hectic camps that seem determined to mould you and your hapless personality so much that at the end of the long, hot months you are simply someone else. For those who want a more peaceful way to spend their vacations, not really doing anything andnot being idle either, Books Bytes N Beyond, a children's library and resource centre may just be the perfect retreat.

Evergreen stuff

"The mission of this centre is to select thoughtfully, acquire, organize, design and preserve materials in print and in electronic formats to serve the recreational, informational, educational, and leisure needs of children. It is also our aim to educate the public regarding library standards," belives Shirani Nayar, Director. Shirani was inspired to start this thanks to the wonderful libraries she saw in the U.S. "Every street had a library and it was wonderful to see how children would reach for the books," she reminisces. Today at her library, the shelves are lined with many varieties of perennial favourites like the Dr. Seuss series, Sesame Street and Winnie the Pooh. For older children, the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew are supplemented with the Enid Blytons. From picture books, easy readers, chapter books, board books, fiction, non-fiction, magazines and reference books, this has it all. For those who want to supplement reading with activity, there are ten-day camps are from April 17 to May 26. "We have sessions in language, science, pottery, art and needlework. It is for the three to 10 age group. To promote reading Orient Longman has offered us discount coupons at their book store," says Shirani. The goodies include unlimited reading time, borrowing three books and a magazine for two weeks and using the computer to run educational software. The interactive sessions on Saturday's programmes include storytelling, reading aloud, logical reasoning, scientific query, world history, art and craft and media programmes, besides bilingual programmes, intergenerational reading, mentoring, tutoring and technological awareness programmes.
