“Yeah!” came the reply from the 1600-strong audience comprising of the smartest brains in the city all set to witness the finals of the Chennai zone Young World Quiz 2008.
On October 15, the Kamarajar Arangam vibrated with energy and enthusiasm until the Quiz Master V. V. Ramanan said it was time to call the finalists to the stage. Vidya Mandir, Mylapore, Chettinad Vidyashram, S.B.O.A School and Junior College, Bala Vidya Mandir, PS Senior Secondary School and P.S.B.B, Nungambakkam were the deserving six schools that were represented on stage by the bright-sparks; ‘deserving’ because they beat 622 other teams from 252 schools to make it to the spot light and ‘bright-sparks’ because of the kinds of questions that they faced valiantly. The questions served varied from anything between Amithabh Bachchan’s would-have-been-name, the D-Day landings in 1944, characters from the Jungle Book to the habitat of the lamas.
The new format of the quiz only helped make the event — managed by Quizwalahs, more fun. . To add to the fun, two school bands from St. Bedes A.I.H.S.S. and St. Ebbas Girls’ H.S.S. performed and kept the crowd entertained.
The winning school, Bala Vidya Mandir’s Siddarth Shrikanth and R. Vignesh hit a hat-trick by also claiming the special prize for their lead in the Snakes and Ladders game board and also another prize for answering the maximum number of questions sponsored by Kissan Amaze Brainfood. The duo will be representing Chennai at the national finals to be held at Vishakapatnam on November 13.
Chettinad Vidyashram’s Seshadhri S. and Arvind Nayak were placed second, while Harish Krishna and S. Varun of P.S.B.B. Nungambakkam came in third. St. Joseph’s H.S.S., Chengalpattu and V.V.K.N.N. CBSE School, Vellore won the best outstation team awards.
The prizes were given away by an overwhelmed Gautham Vasudev Menon, Cine Director. Commenting on the level of difficulty of the question and the intelligence of the children, Gautam Menon said that the Quiz Master didn’t have to worry about the parents or teachers answering the questions from the audience as the question were very difficult. “I got only four right,” he joked.
The title sponsor was Extramarks.com, and the associate sponsors were DC Books Mango, Pepsico Cheetos, Kissan Amaze Brainfood and Vizag Steel Plant. The national sponsors were Cycle Brand Agarbathie, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Reynolds, State Bank of Travancore, Penguin Books, Firefox Bikes and Lotte Caramilk.
