2013 promises a lot of action. Here’s a calendar of some of the events that you might be interested in.

January

21: Inauguration of Barack Obama’s second term as president of the U.S.

31 - Feb 17: Cricket ODI World Cup for Women, Mumbai

February

13 to 21 (Tentative) : The XII South Asian Games, will be hosted in India for the third time — after Kolkata and Chennai, this time it is in Delhi. It will see the participation of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, besides India, of course.

24: The 85th Academy Awards, Los Angeles, California, recognising the best in talent and cinema in Hollywood and from around the world. Or simply, the Oscars! This year, it’s going to be special for us Indians because Life of Pi , an Indian story, has bagged the second highest number of nominations and Carnatic vocalist Bombay Jayashri has been nominated for an Oscar in the Original Song category for ‘Pi’s Lullaby’ along with composer Mychael Danna.

March:

Will hopefully see the opening of the world’s tallest building Sky City in Changsha, China, at 2,749ft high with over 220 floors. If it is successfully completed, Sky City will beat the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, as the tallest building by 10 meters.

Scheduled to start construction this month, the proposed building is in the news for the announcement that it will be completed in three months!

April

3 to May 26: Pepsi Indian Premier League 2013. This year’s edition sees a new sponsor and a new team – the Sun Risers Hyderabad, with the inaugural match and the finals scheduled to be held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

June

6-23: ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales

23: On this date we will witness the biggest moon, a.k.a. supermoon, of 2013, when it’s closest to the Earth at a distance of 221,824 miles.

July

1: Croatia will join the European Union and become its 28th member.

25 to August 24: The World Games, Cali, Colombia. An international sporting event, that features all sports and sporting disciplines that are not contested in the Olympics. It is organised by the International World Games Association under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee.

October

27: Airtel Indian Grand Prix, Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida

November:

It is the tentative month when the Mangalyaan mission is said to be launched. It is the planned Mars orbiter by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It is during this month that Mars is closest to Earth.

Mid-November through December: This one’s for the avid sky watchers and enthusiastic astronomers and everyone else who doesn’t want to miss out on the “comet of the century”! Comet ISON is touted to be the brightest comet seen in many generations, in fact, brighter than even the full moon. Discovered late last year, the comet when closest to the sun (on November 28), will appear brighter than the full moon.

December

10: The Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony, Oslo, Norway

Also look out for

Assembly elections in the states of: Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Karnataka, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan

Launch of China’s lunar satellite Chang’e 3, an unmanned exploration vehicle, probably in the second half of the year. It will explore the lunar surface, and carry out several tests related to environment and space technology.
