Students of the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls at Nadakkavu in Kozhikode, have found a great way to make their birthdays a meaningful occasion by gifting the class a book of their choice for the class library. In this high school, there are 21 classes in different divisions. Almost all of them have a library of their own.

This is in addition to the school library with a collection of 13,000 books. “The class libraries are set up by students by pooling in birthday gifts and other contributions,” says K. Shobhana, library-in-charge and language teacher . The Parents and Teachers Association with several other charity and volunteer organisations has contributed much to the library at the school. The library secured the M.N. Sathyarthi Memorial Award for 2009, which is given for the best school library in the educational district.
