The students of Annai Vellankanni School, Sowripalyam, used their Christmas vacation to spread awareness among the residents about the importance of solid waste management and source segregation of garbage. They were given a short orientation from Siruthuli as part of their school programme. The school principal, Mercy Victor, monitored the activities. The children distributed pamphlets about segregation of garbage into degradable and non-degradable waste. They also stressed the importance of making a compost pit. Plastic waste on a large scale can thus be recycled without reaching the roadside ditch and causing stagnant drains and mosquitoes. The students' efforts were very well received as evident from the comments it drew from the residents of Krishna Colony, MGR Nagar and Sowripalayam Piruvu. Asked to record their feedback, residents not only signed their approval but also wrote encouraging remarks, and most importantly promised to follow the instructions given to them by the students.
