The premiere of InCITE's +91 Residences Extended exhibition in Bangalore brought forth some good responses. A look by Ranjani Govind
The endeavours of InCITE (InClined towards Ideas Thoughts and Expressions - in Contemporary Architecture) are by far known to many for its exploration of meaningful designs in architecture and bringing them into the limelight. InCITE is an initiative by Nithya Srinivasan and Kiran Venkatesh (founding principals of InFORM Architects) dedicated to the dissemination and discussion of contemporary Indian architecture through events such as exhibitions, discussions and publications.
InCITE's earlier book +91 Residences, showcased more than 100 significant examples of contemporary Indian architectural thoughts.
Now the company has launched ‘+91 Residences Extended,' a publication that includes 49 new residences and 10 essays by successful architects. The launch at an exhibition last week generously contained exhibits taken from this publication. “Only a showcase would give people an idea of the factors that mattered for these projects/architects to get featured in the book, +91 Residences Extended,” says Nithya.
The compilation has projects shown through photographs, drawings, conceptual sketches or models and a brief write-up. Explains Kiran, “The debates spawned by the events of the first volume have been expanded in the sequel through invited essays, a first step towards verbal expression beyond documentation and re-presentation. The essays are the voices of architects, relating to their personal experience with residential landscape design, the development of residential architecture through history, or the search for inner/outer meanings. They differ in their tones, emotion, advocacy and interests. The texts construct and explain / imagine possible experiences, engagements and multiple readings of issues and context.”
Contributing architects Kamat-Rozario and Vatsala DaCunha joined Harish Hande and architects Sathya Prakash Varanashi, Dev & Rajani Bildikar for the book release. “Our architecture gallery is envisioned to be an event-space in the city for architecture and looks forward to a packed calendar of architectural events such as workshops, discussions, exhibitions and film screenings in the new year,” says Nithya.
As has always been InCITEs assertion, the book is hardly a ‘judge of projects,' clarify architects Nithya and Kiran, “When one thinks of relevant and interesting facts that could grab attention from design lovers for their exceptionality, the projects and work displayed in the book bring forth an assortment of suggestions, each project and work bringing about different answers for a design possibilities.
