Hema Vijay suggests a handy and lightweight organic soil substitute for your garden

Coco peat or coir pith, the processed dust of coconut husk has now come to be accepted as a lightweight and eco-friendly soil substitute.

It is now available as easy-to-use grow bags into which plants can be grown directly; as seedling trays that allow the seedling to be easily squeezed out along with the coco pith it is rooted in, without damage to the roots; as dehumidified discs and bricks of various sizes, that can be stored and used in open containers or pipes by simply adding water and manure to it. “Even a 100cm X 20cm X 20cm grow bag with coco peat (that can be used to raise about five or more plants) weighs just three kilos, which makes it ideal for growing plants on the terrace and in balconies, without causing stress to the load-bearing capacity of the building’s ceiling”, says G. Udayakumar, Director, Bloom & Peat Products, which manufactures and exports coco peat in various forms to European countries and to the U.S.

To avoid use of plastic grow bags, one can use coco peat in terracotta pots. Even accounting for the weight of terracotta pots, substituting coco peat for soil substantially reduces the weight of the potting mixture. For details, log on towww.bloompeat.
