With wood turning dearer by the day, the focus has now shiftedto bamboo, G. MANJULA KUMAR has more.

Folding screens made in bamboo, rattan, cast iron or aluminium may have empty spaces which may be filled with cane wire weave, latticed wood panels, or painted cloth.

With wood turning expensive by the day, the focus has now shifted to bamboo. It is widely used because it is relatively more resistant to pests. And those wishing to give an ethnic look to their interiors can easily opt for this versatile material.

Bamboos are stacked one upon another for partitions. It can be plain varnish for the polish or riot colours sprayed on it. You can also have bamboo lattice, or bamboo frames with grass mats as panels. If planning to divide the living room opening out to the patio, then go for bamboo plant pots as hanging dividers.

As bamboo has compartments in it, take big sized one and get a piece taken out on side. Fill it with soil and have plants of your choice, preferably those which do not have thick root growth. Take as many bamboos you need and tie them with a rope at regular intervals and hang it up for a green screen.

Glass as a material for room partition is very much in vogue but expensive. Glass partitions come in various forms such as carved glass, frosted glass, stained glass and glass blocks. It gives a sense of openness and stunning visual effect with light coming through glass and brightening the room.

Frosted glass facilitates a very good effect. Etching with deep engraving and crystal work also make stunning partitions.

Glass block gives privacy and comes handy when making smaller interior partitions. It is widely used as divider in the bathrooms, but they are being used in the living rooms too for the dramatic effect it gives out when back-lit.

Glass block walls are light, airy, give a translucent effect and they are water proof. The latest variation is stack glass wall wherein strips of glass are stacked upon one another to create a partition. Laminated glass is also a new concept.

Then there is wood which is very versatile albeit expensive. Latticed frames, plain vertical strips, stacked wood bars, and hollow wood screens ensure that the lighting in the room is not affected. A good carpenter can deliver the goods. Do a little homework on what you want and what suits your pocket and go shopping.
