Despite waking up early, thirty-year-old K. Damayanti would end up cursing herself for the delay in preparing meals for the family and the culprit for this happened to be the scheduled and unscheduled power cuts. She even faced the ire of her husband K. Srinath for the delays and sometimes he would leave for office without the lunch box.
Damayanti's neighbours used to face similar problems everyday. Fed up with the nuisance, 18 flat owners in a multi-storeyed building in Hyderabad's West Marredpally came together and installed a soundproof generator to equip themselves against power cuts.
The families in this building are now a relieved lot and completing the daily morning chores on time. “We are now able to operate ovens and grinders for preparing breakfast easily. Otherwise, power cuts had turned our life miserable,” says Damayanti.
Owing to the recent general strike, the sale of soundproof generators registered 10 per cent increase with flat owners of multi-storeyed buildings and industrial units getting them installed.
Even after the Telangana employees called off their strike, there has not been much improvement in power supply, and scheduled power cuts to domestic, industry and other sectors still continuing to be an irksome factor.
At the same time, officials do point out that the present norm of power cuts, reduced to two hours per day, could become a daily norm for the next few months.
Traders attribute the spurt in sales to the general strike. Several occupants of multi-storeyed buildings in the city and its suburbs bought these electrical equipment to address the problem. Many IT companies in Madhapur, Gachibowli and Kondapur, industrialists from Uppal, Balanagar and Cherlapally too installed them.
According to dealers, there are different varieties of soundproof generators ranging between 62.5 kilovolt amperes (KVA) and 125 KVA. For instance, a 62.5 KVA generator costing over Rs.3.50 lakh is sufficient for an apartment with 16 flats. Occupants can use power supply to operate the air-conditioner and lights in a house along with common area lighting and lift, explains Powerica Generators Sales Manager, Peddi Raju.
He says separate cables are required for providing supply to the apartment through a generator. The company gives two years warranty. Replacement of filter and servicing should be done every six months or every 300 hours, whichever is earlier.
Ten litres of diesel is required for operating the generator for over an hour. Manually operated and automatic generators are also available in the market.
And with the administration looking poised to continue the present power cuts schedule till summer, traders look at the possibility of sales going up further from January.
