For the second year, the Coimbatore Builders and Contractors Association is recruiting civil engineers and diploma holders from colleges in Coimbatore.

President of the association CT. Narayanan said that 1,400 students, including 300 diploma students, took an online examination conducted by the association recently. They will be short-listed and recruited after an interview on March 2 by about a dozen construction companies.

The association organised a similar programme last year and 165 students were recruited and about 80 per cent of them are working at the firms for nearly a year now. The association organised a meeting with those recruited last year for their suggestions and feedback and they suggested that the students should be given opportunities to work at construction sites and exposure to different kinds of work.

This year, the companies plan to recruit about 125 students. The requirement and the number of companies have come down because of the impact of the economic slowdown on the sector. However, the response from the students is encouraging, he said. The association will organise an academic interaction with civil engineering students in Coimbatore on March 19.

Representatives of different segments of the construction industry, including valuers, builders, and architects will participate in the panel discussion, he added.
