Angamaly in Kochi's charmed circle

The town's proximity to the city has helped.

As cities move on the fast track and burst at the seams, planners think of developing satellite towns. Neighbouring small towns thus enter the big league. The development of Angamaly, a town between Kochi and Thrissur, can be so explained.

Angamaly is well connected to the two cities, and with Main Central Road starting from the town, driving down to Kottayam and intermediate towns is easy. The town is near the Nedumbasserry airport; Kalady, a pilgrim centre; and Athirapally, a picturesque location famed for its waterfalls. All these have catapulted the town to a promising destination for real estate and industry.

To a large extent, Angamaly owes its importance to the growth of Kochi. The flourishing city, however, lacks infrastructure, and many of its roads are too choked for smooth commuting and freight movement. While mega projects such the international container transshipment terminal at Vallarpadam have materialised, and several others, such as the LNG terminal, are coming up, inadequate urban amenities have been a damper.

Angamaly, strategically located in central Kerala, derives its advantage from its proximity to the airport, Subrahmanyam, top executive of RM Co Builders Private Ltd., says. The firm is planning to set up ‘Technocity,' a real-estate project with 100 residential units on about 5.5 hectares of land in the town near Koratty, where an information technology (IT) park is being set up. Real-estate activity is on the rise in Angamaly, says Mathew, manager of Oliyapuram Builders, executing various interior design and associated works. Angamaly is the northern gateway to the commercial capital of Kerala, says Reji Warrier, marketing executive of Surabhi Homes.

Less congested

As Aluva, the neighbouring town, gets congested, people have started choosing Angamaly for residential and other purposes. The presence of specialty hospitals, engineering colleges, and business schools makes the place ideal for housing projects, Mr. Warrier says.

The real-estate group has a villa project in full swing. It is planning to launch an apartment project considering the demand.

A less-polluted environment and strategic connectivity make Angamaly ideal for industrial and associated projects, says T.K.M. Pillai, Adviser, Infrastructures Kerala Ltd. (INKEL), a public-private enterprise, which is setting up INKEL City, a built-up module for ventures. INKEL and the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation have jointly developed a master plan for 20 hectares of land adjacent to Transformers and Electricals Kerala Ltd. in the town. Twelve hectares of the land will be developed as INKEL City. Standard design modules are being constructed on 2.2 hectares of land.
