Vadodara (formerly Baroda) is the third largest and most populated city in Gujarat, after Ahmedabad and Surat. Vadodara is one among the four cities in the state which has a population of more than one million.

The city is situated on the banks of the river Vishwamitri, southeast of Ahmedabad and 139 kilometres from the state capital, Gandhinagar.

Vadodara is an important city in Gujarat. Till the 1960s, it was known as a cultural and educational centre. However, after a few years, the city started emerging as an important industrial and commercial hub of the state. In the early part of the 1960s, the city had more than 250 factories belonging to the chemical, pharmaceutical, cotton textiles and machine tools industries.

In the same period, the establishment of Gujarat Refinery and Indian Oil Corporation Limited saw a spurt in industrial growth. Even today, Vadodara is considered as one of India’s important industrial hubs, thanks to favourable factors like raw material availability, product demand, and availability of human, financial and material resources and presence of numerous public and private sector industries.

Another contributing factor for this development is the discovery of oil and gas in Ankleshwar. The Vadodara region has benefited from the resulting industrialisation.

The city has various large-scale industries such as Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals (GSFC), Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (IPCL, now owned by Reliance Industries Limited) and Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL) near Gujarat Refinery.

Other important public sector units in the region are Heavy Water Project, Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL).

There are also a number of glass manufacturing companies in and around Vadodara, including Haldyn Glass, HNG Float Glass and Piramal Glass.

The presence of such large industrial units has spawned a number of smaller businesses in the region.
