The borrowed-from- the-West hip hop gets a local flavour thanks to DNOAX. SANGEETA G.

The 21st century redefined hip hop to mean drugs, cash, cars, clothes, semi-clad women and the bling. An Indian band of 20 rappers/artists is all set to change this.

The rise

DNOAX or Desi Number One Artistes X was started by Snypah Killah a.k.a Varun in 2007 with four rappers in Chennai. Over the years many artists from different parts of the country have joined the band. They believe hip hop is no longer the identity of one race, country or continent. Their music reflects current social and political issues through a fusion of rap and hip hop mixed with classical music.

DNOAX released their debut album “They See (Desi) Revolution” in 2007 under their own record label Desi Media Networks (DMN). The 12-track album has hit tracks like Bhool Na Jaana , They See (Desi) Revolution with a fusion of English and Hindi redefining hip hop and adding a desi twist to it.

“We believe in the consciousness of rap; content that is essential and conscious; music that elevates people's mind,”says Meghraj a.k.a Megh uh Watt. They have set a benchmark for hip hop music in the country.

Being in different parts of the country, the band breaks geographical boundaries by practicing predominantly via Skype and teleconferences. The influence of diverse cultures can also be heard in their songs. The band draws inspiration from artists like Eminem, Jay Z, Nas, 2Pac among others.

Speaking of future plans, Meghraj said the band will release a few singles in the forthcoming months. Their debut album “They See (Desi) Revolution” is available worldwide at Amazon mp3, Napster, Emusic, iTunes and Rhapsody.

DNOAX has been touring the country as part of The Park New Festival and will perform in Chennai on the 23rd at Pasha, Park Hotel. Audiences have an entertaining night of music, dance to look forward to which not only entertains but also makes a statement.
