And, the Crossword goes to ...

The winners of the Hutch Crossword Book Awards 2006 were announced in Mumbai on February 21. The award conceptualised by Crossword seeks to showcase quality Indian writing in English fiction, English non-fiction and Indian language fiction translation categories. Vikram Chandra's Sacred Games picked up the award in the English fiction category, while the award in the English non-fiction category went to Vikram Seth for his Two Lives. In the Indian language fiction translation category, the award was shared between C.S. Lakshmi (author) and Lakshmi Holmstrom (translator) for In A Forest, A Deer and M. Mukundan (author) and A. J. Thomas (translator) for Kesavan's Lamentations. Each of the winners received a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakh, in addition to a trophy, a certificate and a citation. In addition, the Hutch Crossword Popular Book Award, which allows readers to pick their favourite book through SMS, was awarded to Kiran Desai for her book The Inheritance Of Loss. The award earned Desai a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a certificate.
