TV Discover the beauty of the polar regions in this new series
Discovery Channel will launch its new series Frozen Planet , which will take the viewer through the polar regions. It will have narration by well-known naturalist Sir David Attenborough. The series promises to capture the fragile beauty and majestic power of the elements on earth.
Here are a few interesting facts and figures about the region, and the encounters the crew faced.
Antarctic ice-cap contains 75 per cent of the world’s freshwater and is the largest concentration of ice on the planet. If the polar ice caps were to melt, global sea levels would rise by 80 mt. London, New York, Tokyo, Rio and most of the world’s other major cities would all be underwater!
Antarctica has the strongest winds on the planet — Katabatic winds blow out from the interior of Antarctica’s frozen ice cap. The maximum wind speed ever measured was just under 200 mph (320 kph)!
The film crew spent five months embedded inside an Adelie penguin colony. It also encountered 10 million polar animals during the course of production.
