With mercury scraping the roof, beat the heat in style, writes Nivedita Ganguly

The blistering hot summer days have finally arrived. And with it comes a whole new range of summer fashion. Summer’s here with the sweltering heat and so is the bold and brighter motifs, exotic shades of crimson, orange, lime greens and lemon yellows that heralds in the sizzling season.

From the plush malls to the roadside stalls, every one is geared up for the long, hot season ahead. Breezy cottons are the perfect fabric for the season. To ensure that you stayed cool and fresh all day through, you would do well to stack your wardrobe with natural fabrics or fabrics that allow your skin to breathe.

The fashion stores in the city have come up with a pleasing range that exudes the pristine charm of summer. With mercury scraping the roof, one can beat the heat in style. From smart Western styles to elaborate ethnic ones, there is plenty to choose from.

Long tunics have made come back this season, says Anita Pawar of ‘Prapancha’ Boutique. They are available in plenty of colours and goes well with a pair of skinny jeans or chudidars. Also, long T-shirts with frills and pleats around the chest are very much in fashion. While kurtis in pleasing white shades are quite in, skirts are not in vogue any longer, she adds. Kalamkari prints have made its way in a big way in the fashion scene. A bit of artistic Kalamkari motifs in kurtis and sarees lend an ethnic touch to the entire outfit. With its new summer collection, ‘Prapancha’ is holding a weekend sale for Ugadi from Saturday to Monday.

The boutique has also introduced a range of trendy footwear from Mayabazaar in bright florescent colours, highlighted with brocades. “The footwear collection is quite new and trendy and goes well with any outfit,” says Anita.

It’s a swirl of colours, weaves and textures at all the branded showrooms in the city. If you want to sport the cool and stylish look, try out the branded range of clothes. Vinis Shopping Mall has introduced its range of summer collection. “Cotton T-shirts in lighter shades are a big hit.

The summer T-shirt collection from Adidas, Reebok, Classic Polo and Pepe for both men and women look quite trendy,” says Sanjay Hirawat of Vinis Shopping Mall. The store also has ethnic cotton dress materials and in the western wear section, a new collection of cotton capris and cargos.

Other stores in the city are out with their summer collection as well. And there are discounts galore everywhere! The hot colours for summer are an eclectic mix of bright and pastel shades. Ethnic salwar kurta sets and sarees, such as Mangalgiris and Venkatgiris, come in earthy and bright colours such as red, blue, orange and rust. White, of course, remains the all-time favourite colour to beat the heat. Kota sarees and salwar kurtas are in this summer, as the fabric is light and lets the skin breathe.

Khadi, the handspun cotton, continues to make a fashion statement. The fabric is in vogue for its comfort and ethnic look. Now a part of every wardrobe, fashion designers use Khadi, both in their ready-to-wear as well as couture collections. The all-time fabric ‘khadi’ has taken on different dimensions this summer with its light pastel shades that provide the perfect comfort in the hot season.
