Paying a price for being a celebrity? India’s most famous women’s tennis player Sania Mirza is finding that is not ‘love-all’ as some embarrassing questions are being posed on her marriage with Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik. Into the fourth year of marriage, (April 14 was their anniversary) Sania, is very relaxed and as always confidence personified while speaking at her residence in Jubilee Hills before flying off for the European circuit which includes the French Open Grand Slam event.

When asked about the media reports on alleged split with Shoaib, Sania reacts, “I don’t know what it is all about. I have neither read nor discussed with him (Shoaib). I visited Pakistan recently, and had great time there. I went out for shopping in the busy streets and was overawed by the warmth and recognition from the crowds.”.

Further elaborating on the rumours, Sania adds, “It is not something which we did not expect. Both of us are sportspersons and we have our own schedules. Sometimes we wonder why are we putting ourselves through these sort of things (hectic schedules)?

A stoic Sania has this to say about the media: “I know the media for too long. I think it has to give some news. Mostly, negative to sell itself. But, again, it is their job. That’s the price for being a celebrity. Celebrity marriages are always under scrutiny.”

For all those who might care to know, Sania informs that “Shoaib will be joining me on the European tour where I am playing the Stuttgart Open, the Madrid Open, the Brussels before the French Open.

Both of us have plenty to offer to the world of sport. And this special bonding is what we enjoy,” says a smiling Sania.
