Car and bike questions? We have the answers

I own a BMW X1 and I'm looking for a car that is sporty, has good engine performance, looks ‘royal' and costs between Rs 25 lakh and Rs. 30 lakh.

Damanpreet Singh

It's hard to find a car that combines all that you are looking for but the car that comes closest is the Skoda Superb. Its prominent grille isn't quite ‘royal', but it gives the Superb road presence and an upmarket feel. Go for the petrol 1.8 TSi version — it is great to drive and very sporty. Performance is amazing for such a small engine.

I want an automatic transmission car with five to six gears that costs between Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 7 lakh from Ford or Hyundai. What are the options?

Varun

Ford does not have an automatic car. You can go in for the Hyundai i10 automatic that suits the price range you have mentioned. i20 is also a good option but it costs more than Rs. 8 lakh.

I want to buy a bike which is sporty and stylish. I have zeroed in on the Yamaha Fazer and R15. Please guide.

Lesly Desmon

If you are keen on buying a sporty bike the R15 will be a good choice but if it is comfort that matters to you more then go in for the Yamaha Fazer.

I am looking for a good diesel mid-segment sedan. I would like to know how Corolla Altis Diesel is doing in terms of price versus performance ratio. Since the new Altis is just a few months old, is the mileage consistent as claimed. What are other cars in this category with respect to price, long-term maintenance cost and on-road mileage and engine power? When is the new Innova expected and what are the key changes in this model?

Rama Krishnan

The Corolla Altis diesel's main competitor is the Renault Fluence diesel. In terms of price, the Altis is much more affordable. The diesel engine is smooth but is not very punchy. If your car is going to be chauffeur-driven, it's an ideal choice. Mileage too is good. Also, Toyota being more established than Renault in India, buying the Altis makes better sense. The new Innova is expected sometime around mid-2012. This will be a major face-lift to the current model that will include a new grille, re-profiled bumpers, new headlights and tail-lamps and fresh interior bits too like a new steering wheel. The engine is expected to see a spike in power and torque figures too.

I have test-driven the new Global Fiesta and also the Hyundai Verna Fludic. Tell me which one is a better option keeping in mind the running costs. Both are diesel cars. My monthly mileage would be around 1500km. Would you suggest me to go for the petrol version?

M. Balasubramanyam

Hyundai Verna is the best diesel in the segment. Going by your monthly mileage your choice of a diesel version is fine.
