Car and bike questions? We have the answers
I want to buy my son a car on his 20th birthday and the budget is Rs. 6-8 lakh. He doesn’t want something boxy like the Santro or Wagon R and I don’t want to buy one that runs too fast. I am looking for style, durability and low maintenance. Please suggest.Adarsh Mannar
Your choices are down to the Chevrolet Aveo, Ford Fiesta and Maruti SX4. They will fulfil your requirements of good (yet not shocking) performance, low maintenance costs, durability and style. So it’s just a matter of letting your son pick. We’d recommend the SX4. Also, if you can stretch your budget a bit, you could get him the Chevrolet SRV, which is a popular car amongst people his age.
I drive a Maruti 800 for about 80 to 90km. Now, I want to go in for a diesel car and have short-listed the Wagon R and Santro. Of the two, which has better mileage, fuel economy and comfort? Would you suggest any other option?Umakant Singh
Unfortunately, neither the Wagon R nor the Santro offers a diesel option. They both have the option of alternate fuel, though — the Wagon R is available with an LPG kit and the Santro with CNG (only in some regions of India). Of the two, we would recommend the Santro Xing because it is better built, more refined and more fuel-efficient. The ride is a bit uncomfortable though. If you want a diesel, opt for the Indica Turbo diesel, or if you can spend a little more, the Swift diesel.
I plan to buy an SUV or a jeep. I am looking for something which is tough and performs well on and off road. I cannot make up my mind between the Mahindra Scorpio and Bolero.Maanbir
Of the two cars you have short-listed, pick the Bolero only if price is an issue. The Scorpio is just as tough and capable. It scores on comfort, luxury and features as well. The Scorpio is a lot better looking and its 2.6-litre common-rail engine is more powerful and refined than the one in the Bolero. If you’re serious about off-roading, both cars are available with optional four-wheel drive.
I want to buy a mid segment car and my budget is Rs. 10 lakh. I have short-listed the Ford Fiesta, Verna, Logan and Chevrolet Aveo. I will travel 60-100km per day.Sundar
Going by your daily travel, we would recommend a diesel to keep long-term costs down. Of the cars you have mentioned, we would recommend the Verna diesel. It is the best on space, comfort, equipment and has a powerful diesel engine. However, for your budget, you can go one step higher and opt for the Chevrolet Optra Magnum diesel. The car is bigger than the rest you have mentioned. This translates into more space, power, equipment and comfort.
