CNN International is focusing on Indian youth

With one in 12 people in the world a young Indian now, CNN International is zooming its lenses on Indian youth from next week to give its global audience "a comprehensive look". Starting this Sunday, both on CNN and CNN-IBN, its partner channel in India, the series, "Eye on India: Generation Next" will stretch for a week, ending next Saturday. As the channel's Senior Vice President, News, Rena Golden puts it: "Six hours of India related stories on the channel every day for a week". Premiering this Sunday at 7.30 p.m. with an hour-long interactive show, "CNN Connects: India's Generation Next", a co-production with CNN-IBN, the series, on its third edition now based on different subjects earlier, will also spill out to other regular shows of CNN like "Talk Asia", "CNN Today" and "World News Asia". While "CNN Connects... " will be anchored by Rajdeep Sardesai and Monita Rajpal in the company of celebrity guests and college students discussing topics like "The Power of Youth" and "The Caste Challenge" with the historic Purana Qila as the backdrop, "Talk Asia" will feature chats with personalities like Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor. "CNN Today" will beam a three-hour line-up of breaking and headline news, business stories, sports and weather reports sub-anchored by Monita along with CNN-IBN anchors like Vidya Shankar Aiyar, Suhasini Haider and Sagarika Ghose. In the evening news programme, "World News Asia", CNN anchor Anjali Rao will sub-anchor from Delhi with Andrew Stevens from its Hong Kong bureau for two hours daily.

India and China

Says Golden, "The rise of both India and China are now the two big stories of Asia. There are a lot of parallels between the two countries like the digital divide, the rich-poor gap, the economic might, etc. Like India, we have done a similar series on China. But India being a democracy gets more prominence." Golden, now in New Delhi for the series, visited China last week. "We have two bureaux in China but the explosion of media is not like India," she adds. As the year 2007 progresses, Golden promises more India-related subjects to flash on the CNN screens. "Also, we will have something lined up for China later this year, particularly on the preparation for the 2008 Olympics," she states. Meanwhile, it is India time.
