TV A documentary on Margaret Thatcher on May 25
History TV18 presents a documentary on ‘Iron Lady’ Margaret Thatcher, the U.K.’s first and thus far only woman Prime Minister.
Margaret Thatcher was best known for her destruction of Britain’s traditional industries, the massive privatisation of social housing and public transport. She was also famous for her right-wing, pro-corporate alliance with the U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
In 1982, Thatcher and her government took the U.K. to war with Argentina over the invasion of the Falkland Islands. The British victory that followed has been cited as a contributory factor to the Conservatives gaining a second term in government in the 1983 general election.
The programme reflects the impact of her leadership in shaping the political and social geography of the U.K., and depicts how her governance led to perennial criticism that eventually led to her fall from power. Said to have captured some of the most crucial facts of the Margaret saga, the documentary apparently does not shy away from the controversy and bitter opposition faced by the Iron Lady during her time in government.
Margaret: A Memoir will be telecast at 8 p.m. on May 25.
