TRENDS Bustier dresses flooded the Cannes red carpet. More range in choice of label, though, would have been welcome

Cannes, this year, seemed studded with bustier dresses, most of them courtesy Raf Simons. Christian Dior’s endorsement deals have certainly come in handy — most of the said bustier dresses have come on Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, the face of the label’s Miss Dior handbag campaign. Looks ranged from a bustier top-and-trousers pairing at The Hunger Games: Catching Fire photo call, to a monochrome dress at the Jimmy P. Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian premiere. (She seems to have developed a thing for bustier dresses; one might recall what she wore at the Met Gala a few weeks ago, at the Academy Awards before that, and the Golden Globes previously.)

But then, it’s not just the Silver Linings Playbook star. Nicole Kidman set the ball rolling at the festival’s opening ceremony with a floral couture bustier dress from the Dior Couture 2013 collection. Chinese actor Zhang Ziyi, the Memoirs of a Geisha star, turned to a bustier top and drainpipe trousers from Raf Simons’ debut Couture 2012 show for Dior, while Julianne Moore, at the screening of The Great Gatsby , turned to Dior Spring/ Summer 2013.

Moving beyond the Dior championing, Lea Seydoux’s bustier dress came from Louis Vuitton, while Sonam Kapoor and Mallika Sherawat opted for full-skirted bustier gowns from Dolce & Gabbana.

Marion Cotillard wore a striped Vivienne Westood Couture dress at a photo call for the Green Carpet Collection by Chopard. At the screening of The Bling Ring , Zhang Ziyi wore another bustier dress, this time from Carolina Herrera.
