They might have come from diverse backgrounds but they had one thing in common — music. Nearly 16 years after they met, Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy are still going strong.

So, what keeps them ticking? “We may not like the same things, but we have to work with one another, despite our differences. Our aim is to create good music,” says Shankar Mahadevan, adding: “What really works for the three of us is the fact that we respect each other as individuals and professionals.”

The musicians, with hits such as Kal Ho Na Ho, My Name is Khan and Taare Zameen Par to their credit, are able to create music to suit any mood — romantic, joyful or emotional — with élan.

“Every project is a challenge. We ensure our music is not repetitive. We set benchmarks for ourselves and work towards raising the bar each time,” says Loy Mendonsa.

Classical training

“I think that has to do with our training. I have learnt classical music, while Loy is into jazz, and Ehsaan into rock and blues. Our ability to create good music has a lot to do with our training,” says Shankar.

The trio is currently working on several projects. “We’ve got Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Two States, One by Two and D Day ,” reveals the usually reticent Ehsaan Noorani.

Talking about the multitude of talent shows, Shankar says, “It is wonderful that there are so many shows encouraging young talent.”

But don’t many winners fading into oblivion after the talent shows end? “Not at all. That is a misconception,” says Loy, adding, “Quite a few winners are busy travelling, performing and recording.”
