Off beat For Hyderabadis, Sunrisers are already the winners

Nobody really had high hopes of the Hyderabad Sunrisers at the start of this IPL season. After all, the team had been through a series of ups and downs, undergone a lot of changes and didn’t even have very big names to boast of. They were undeniably the underdogs. Yet, despite all odds, Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to capture hearts as they played an exceptional season. Despite their not qualifying for the finals, IPL fans in the city are not a disheartened lot it turns out.

“The team’s performance is definitely praiseworthy. With just four reasonably good bowlers, we managed to pull off the whole season,” says producer Suresh Babu.

“We didn’t have a strong batting support and maybe if we’d had a couple of better players and if some of our current players had been in better form we could’ve been one step ahead. I think next time round the owners should try and make the team more Hyderabadi. Regardless the team garnered tremendous support from the city.”

Last night’s match too looked like it would swing our way. But in the last few overs, the tide turned. Anyway, we fought well and that’s what counts,” Suresh Babu adds.

For Karthick Umesh, a banker and an avid IPL fan, Sunrisers played exceptional cricket this season. “Everyone knew that ours was not a very strong team, yet they managed to win so many games. What mattered was that Sunrisers played as a team and didn’t depend on one single player.

Even on Wednesday we didn’t play bad cricket, but it’s just a game and these things happen. We definitely deserved to be in the top three,” he says.

Actor Madhushalini though was a tad disappointed by Wednesday’s loss. “They’ve played a brilliant game so far, but it is disappointing that Sunrisers is not in the finals. However, all said and done, they’ve done a great job and in fact, Darren Sammy had become the new hot stuff. The team coming this far was a huge surprise for everyone. I’ve enjoyed watching the games and despite being busy with a shoot on Wednesday evening I watched bits and pieces of the game between shots.

At one point it seemed like we’d win the game but then T20 is very unpredictable,” she concludes.
