A full night of Kathakali and with a difference is what Kathakali Vismayam promises to be. Organised by ‘Sathwikam’, as part of its first anniversary, the event will have seven important scenes from six plays featuring six veshams or types of characters.

The magic will unfold with Nala, in Nalacharitham 2{+n}{+d}Day , one of the best examples of pacha (green) vesham that portrays the noble characters in Kathakali. The other veshams like the minukku , which is for women, sages, Brahmins find representation in Parasuraman in Seethaswayamvaram , Chitralekha and Usha in Banayudham .

There are three types of Thadi (beard) veshams. The Vella Thadi of white beard as in Hanuman, here in the play Lavanasuravadham , Chuvanna Thadi or red beard, for evil characters Dushasana in Dushasanavadham , and Karutha Thadi or black beard like that of the character Kattalan in Nalacharitham 2{+n}{+d}Day .

Two Kathi veshams, villainous male characters, Sishupalan in Rajasooyam and Roudra Bheeman in Dushasanavadham complete the list of characters lined up for this event.

Kalamandalam Balasubramaniam, Kottakkal Kesavan Kundalayar, FACT Padmanabhan, Sadanam Bhasi Kalamandalam Soman, Sadanam Krishnadas, Kottakkal Madhu, Kottakkal Narayanan, and other top artistes are slated to be part of this event.

Kathakali Vismayam is dedicated to the memory of Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair whose birth centenary is being celebrated this year. Prior to the staging of the plays ‘Sathwikam’ will present a cash award to Cherthala Padmanabha Panikkar.
