Konkona Sen ‘stages' a comeback
When Konkona Sen Sharma arrives to talk about her play, The Blue Mug, hours before the performance in Hyderabad, we can't feel but compare her off-screen persona to that of her on-screen role in Wake Up Sid. Dressed in a green Lucknawi kurta and blue jeans, she looks every bit the urban working woman than a star.
The team has staged the play in Mumbai before arriving in Hyderabad.
“A lot of people came and told us that they liked the play and our performance. But very few people would come and tell us if they didn't like it,” she says with a smile. It's perhaps this sense of clarity and level headedness that has made her a success story.
“Until I became part of this production last year (the team staged a show in Bangalore in 2009), I hadn't done theatre for four to five years. It's been wonderful to get back on stage. Everyone in this team knew each other for a few years and that made work all the more fun,” she says.
In her college days, she's watched director Atul Kumar and actress Sheeba Chaddha stage The Hamlet and Sleeper Clown. “They do really good work and I have a lot of respect for them,” says Konkona.
Konkona has taken time out of her movie assignments to be part of the all-India tour and international tour for the play. “I enjoy movies and theatre. I am an actor and would be happy to do both films and theatre.”
Her next film will be Athithi Tum Kab Jaaoge. . She brightens up and says, “I had a lot of fun doing this comedy. Ajay and I are a married couple and our small world gets shaken up when a distant relative (Paresh Rawal) arrives from a village.”
Besides this, she has Right Yaa Wrong, Mirch, Rituparno Ghosh's Sunglass co-starring Jaya Bachchan, Madhavan and Naseeruddin Shah and her mother Aparna Sen's Bengali film Iti Mrinalini. There's certain comfort level working with her mother, she admits. “We maintain a certain degree of formality on the sets. I look up to her as a director but I cannot blur the fact that she is my mother.” Iti Mrinalini is a story of a 70-plus actress, played by Aparna Sen and Konkona plays the actress in her younger years.SANGEETHA DEVI DUNDOO
