EATING OUT Enjoy the spirit of ‘thattukada' at Hotel Park Central

N ostalgia beckons at Mir Hotels & Resorts' Thattukada Food Festival at Hotel Park Central this week. On the Kaloor Kadavanthara road, it recreates the actual spirit of the Thattukada and brings the ethnic flavour of Kerala's roadside eateries to the ‘naadan' food lovers in Kochi. The rustic thatched roof, long benches and tables, ethnic kerosene lamps, film posters and golden melodies played from an old radio will take you back to old Kerala.

Typical Kerala-style dishes will be served while you watch the chef prepare appams on a rustic stove and add the final dash of spice to the accompanying kozhi curry (chicken curry). There is Njandu Curry (crab dish) and the main course is of course, everyone's favourite – the Kappa Biriyani (tapioca dish). Seafood and poultry lovers can take their pick from an interesting menu ranging from curried crabs, squids, oyster and prawns to region-specific dishes such as stuffed meat, Kuttanad Duck Roast, Quail Fry and the evergreen Meen Moilee, prepared by the Executive Chef, Rajesh Ayyappan, who is adept at making tea-shop delights. The mackeral recipe, Ayila Puliyila Chuttatu, will take you back to Grandma's kitchen: the special leaf that each fish is wrapped in brings out a special flavour.

“Over 30 delicacies from Kerala's Thattukada have been hand-picked for the fete,” according to Prabith Premraj, GM of Park Central.

The prices are reasonable. The Thattukada festival will be on till mid-November, from 7.00 pm to 11.00 p.m.
