Style statements for school

As a new school year begins, new bags, pencil boxes, lunch boxes, water bottles, umbrellas and the like are the order of the day for children.

MetroPlus takes a peep at what’s available in the market. Archies, Baby Shop, Big Bazaar, Chellam Umbrella Mart, Dianby, Style Plus, Sylcon and the bylanes of East Fort are some of the shops that we visited in the city. Here’s a list of some of the stuff that’s new, practical and pocket-friendly.

Bag them

What is in: There are different kinds of bags ranging from the conventional backpack to wheeled bags. The tiny tots can choose from stuffed animal backpacks, the lower primary students can pick bags based on their favourite cartoon character and the upper primary children can opt from conservative-looking backpacks.

What is popular with children: Bags based on cartoon characters, especially those with Barbie, Dora the Explorer, Ben 10, Angry Birds and Winnie the Pooh.

What parents go for: The new crop of light weight backpacks for older kids, which have padded straps, and light-weight cartoon-based character bags for the younger ones.

Price factor: The light weight bags are priced at Rs. 500 onwards.

Pack a bite

What is in: Steel lunch boxes, insulated lunch boxes and plastic lunch boxes.

What is popular with children: Plastic lunch boxes that come in various shapes and sizes with cartoon characters and art work.

What parents go for: Plastic lunch boxes fabricated using food grade plastic. These boxes have separate compartments for main dishes and accompaniments. The high grade plastic is said to keep food fresh.

Price factor: The price for plastic lunch boxes starts at Rs. 250

Pen it

What is in: Steel pencil boxes, plastic pencil cases, magnetic pencil boxes, pencil pouches…

What is popular with children: Magnetic pencil cases with cartoon characters such as Spiderman, Mickey Mouse, the Disney Princesses and the like are the latest in the market. These double-sided cases have magnetic snaps to shut them firmly and have integrated sharpeners. Some cases also come with eraser holders and pencil holders.

What parents go for: Pencil pouches that comes in various sizes and designs. While some of the designs are meant for the younger lot, the older lot will be happy with those that come in simple designs. The highlight of these pouches is that they are light-weight and compact.

Price factor: The price for pencil pouches start at Rs. 25

Bottled up

What is in: Single-coloured bottles, Disney- branded sipper bottles, Garfield- branded sipper bottles

What is popular with children: Disney-branded sipper bottles.

What parents go for: Single-coloured bottles made with high grade plastic. These are easy to operate as you have to just twist and open. They are also easy to clean.

Price factor: Single-coloured bottles cost Rs. 200 and upwards

Stay dry

What is in: Umbrellas now come in different sizes, shapes and folds. Some of the latest in the field are pagoda-shaped umbrellas, frilly umbrellas, polka-dotted umbrellas, umbrellas with animal designs, cartoon characters and ‘hatee’ umbrellas (a hat like umbrella sans handle)

What is popular with children: Umbrellas with animal designs and cartoon characters.

What parents go for: Compact umbrellas with multiple folds.

Price factor: Prices for these multi-fold umbrellas start at Rs. 400
