Chat Post-Raanjhanaa’s success Sonam Kapoor looks for roles that will set her apart
Sonam Kapoor is elated what with two of her releases Raanjhanaa and Bhaag Milkha Bha ag garnering critical acclaim and good box office returns. She talks about success and character-driven roles.
Are you looking at signing a spate of films after the success of Raanjhanaa ?
I am working on two films right now — Yash Raj Film’s untitled next (with Ayushmann Khurrana) and Khoobsurat . I haven’t signed any other film. I am going to take my time and choose the right films. I am very choosy, my character and the script have to appeal to me.
You keep talking of your father (actor Anil Kapoor) complimenting your Raanjhana a co-star Dhanush. Does he refrain from praising you because he wants to keep you grounded?
He complimented me a lot for the film; it’s just that I don’t talk about it. I would rather talk about how much he complimented Dhanush.
Are you happy with your performance in Raanjhanaa ?
No, I am not satisfied with my performance; I could have done better.
Your look in both Ranjhanaa and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is very simple. Do you feel the fashionista in you is not getting a chance to emerge on screen?
I am not playing Sonam Kapoor in any of the films. I have to dress according to the character. If I were playing myself, I would dress differently.
You have a small role in Bhaag Milkha Bhaa g. Why did you decide to do it?
It gave me an opportunity to work again with director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra after Dilli 6 and a chance to act with Farhan Akhtar. I have a small but a significant role, it’s a special appearance. I also did the film because Prasoon Joshi has written the most incredible script that I have ever read. I was crying while I was reading it. It’s an iconic film and will go down in history; and I wanted to be a part of it even if it’s a small part.
Apparently you charged only Rs. 11 for this film.
I feel that this film will do a great service to the country and to sportspersons. Rakeysh offered me Rs. 11 as shagun .
Are you going to reprise Rekha’s role in Khoobsurat ?
Yes, I like the spirit of the heroine in the film that is being produced by my sister. It’s too early to talk about it since I have not started shooting for it.
Are you a romantic at heart?
I am a very romantic person and I want to live life vicariously through my characters.
What kind of a partner are you looking for?
Someone who is intelligent, likes adventures, likes to travel ... just a nice guy actually (laughs).
