With several Bollywood romantic hits like “Raabta”, “Yaariyan”, “Phir Le Aya Dil” and most recently “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2 in his kitty, singer Arijit Singh has made a mark in tinsel town. Here he talks about his tryst with success and the difficulty in matching the musical standard of the original Aashiqui .

Excerpts from the interview:

How was the experience of singing in Aashiqui 2 ?

It was definitely a very exciting one. Considering that Aashiqui was a huge commercial and musical hit, Bhushan Kumar, Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt made sure that people working in Aashiqui 2 give their finest. In today’s time when albums always have a dance or a peppy number, this one hasn’t. Still, people can relate to it, feel the passion and are humming the songs.

Did you feel the pressure while recording?

Though it felt very hectic but was equally energetic. At times I felt like, ‘ kitna karenge abhi bahut zyada ho raha hai,’ (how much will we do it, it is getting too much) because it was like a process to make it the best. And I sang a song at least five to six times because Mukeshji used to tell, ‘This is good but try harder. Much better will come.’

Was it difficult to meet the expectations considering there will always be a comparison with Aashiqui ?

In Aashiqui , I loved Nadeem-Shravan’s music and Kumar Sanu’s voice. All the songs were great in it. So when I started working on the sequel, I immediately went back to the earlier one and played all the tracks. Felt like ‘aisa toh kabhi ban nahi sakta’ (you cannot recreate the original charm). But gradually realised that this is a new age and when I started singing for the sequel, I felt the magic of Aashiqui 2 . The essence of the original and its sequel are the same and songs are melodious too.

Do you think good songs influence the viewers to watch a movie?

Earlier it was the case but I don’t know if today people are really compelled to go and watch the movie because they are influenced by its songs. I remember how I loved the songs from Raja Hindustani and watched the movie because of it.

You made your first appearance with a reality show called Fame Gurukul . Though you weren’t a part of the winning league, you have carved a niche for yourself in the industry. How?

Not winning the title definitely helped me to grow because if I would have been a part of the winning team at that time, I might have been very busy. Also, as I wasn’t part of the winning party, it gave me a lot of time to reflect on my music so that I could plan to perform better. I definitely worked hard, but won’t say that I struggled. I went to good musicians and learnt from scratch. A lot of people are supporting me, liking my work and audiences are also appreciating my efforts. So, maybe this is the reason I continue to be here.
