With two movies under her belt and many projects in hand, young designer Nikul Naidu seems to be the new kid on the block

She may come across as your usual Page 3 type, but there's more to Nikul Naidu than meets the eye. For someone who started out by designing clothes for herself and a few friends, Nikul is well on her way to establishing herself as a versatile designer in the city and among the film frat as well. She began designing while she was still in college and soon after she graduated in commerce from Bhavans, she decided that this was the field she wanted to be in. "Fashion is something that's inborn in me," she says. "While I was in college, I would design all my clothes and for a few friends too. Word soon spread, and I was flooded with offers to design clothes for all occasions." After college she went on to do a one-year diploma in fashion designing from NIFT, "People are always looking to see what credentials you hold and so I did this course for the credibility it had to offer. In my opinion, I don't think any designing course helps. Either you have the creative instincts, or you don't," she states unabashedly At around the time when she began designing for friends and people started admiring the clothes she designed for herself, Nikul was approached to do Charmme's clothes in Krishna Vamsi's Political Rowdy. This helped her bring in her next film project - Allu Arjun 's clothes in the movie Happy. What she doesn't like about movies though, is that designers don't get enough freedom to do their work. "Right now, people involved with the movies don't know what's in, what's out and what suits people. They only want to cater to the masses. Hopefully, this situation will change soon." She believes in taking things as they come and right now yearns to design for the younger lot of the film fraternity. "I would love to design for actress Genelia. She has great attitude and can carry off anything!" Future plans include designing for Bollywood as well as her own store in Hyderabad.Nikul designs for men and women and her comfortable, no-fuss clothes can be worn to a night out in town, for formal events or even to a casual soiree. Recently, she even designed the entire bridal collection for a friend's wedding. Her flair lies in using vibrant colours in remarkable cuts and patterns. All this, of course, is done using only high quality, natural and flowy fabrics. Since she's such a stickler for quality, Nikul even ensures that the lining of the clothes she makes are flawless."If I'm not happy with the fabric, I'm not comfortable designing something out it," she says. This perhaps is the reason why her clients only have to tell her what kind of an outfit they want, and like a true couturier, she sews up something magical each time.RENUKA VIJAY KUMAR
