Director Hansal Mehta, who was named the best director for Shahid in the 61st National Film Awards announced on Wednesday, says it is an acknowledgment of the hard work and honesty that he has put in to make the biopic. Rajkummar Rao, who plays the title role in the film, has been named in the best actor category along with Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu, who won it for Perariyathavar . As per the jury, Rajkummar’s portrayal of the intriguing journey of a Muslim young man who is persecuted, and who rebels and ultimately comes back to fight the injustice as a committed law abiding lawyer, brings to life the soul of Shahid Azmi.
“I am overwhelmed and really happy hearing this. It is an award for the entire team and it is the recognition to the fact that anything made with determination will succeed,” said Mehta. “I don’t make films with an aim to win National Awards; the intention was to present a story with honesty. These awards are recognition of hard work and honesty that has been put while making the film,” he added.
