A quiz for book lovers
The first question was simple enough, “Name the writer who has been elected to Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram” (Shashi Tharoor). But, the following ones got progressively trickier. It was at a gathering of booklovers celebrating the Oxford Bookstore’s second anniversary, that one was introduced to absorbing trivia about books. Students, doctors, housewives, teachers and business people speculated, guessed, fabricated and sometimes surprised every one, including themselves, with the correct answers!
A preliminary written round decided who the teams would be and six teams were created to face the onslaught of questions from Professor Rangarajan, Coimbatore’s favourite quizmaster. Whoever said people don’t read anymore. And, the things they read! People actually remembered the first lines of books as varied as Narayana Murthy’s Better India Better World, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Sidney Sheldon’s Other side of Me and J.D Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, etc. Susan Boyle, Mark Twain, Ram Chandra Guha, the Phantom of the Opera, Feluda and Sherlock Holmes also enlivened the quiz.
Rajeev Kamineni of the Oxford Bookstore hopes to make the Booklovers’ Quiz a calendar event in Coimbatore and a band of enthusiastic quizzers are completely in agreement with him. And, to leave you with a teaser, “With reference to a self help bestseller, expand S.U.M.O. Don’t know the answer? It stands for Shut Up and Move On…So I will.P.S
